Sure, getting your shots isn’t exactly fun, but you know what’s worse? Getting sick and missing out on awesome vacations, holiday gatherings, sporting events and more. Luckily, there’s a way to help make sure you don’t miss out – getting your flu and COVID vaccines.

Flu vaccines are proven to help prevent millions of illnesses and have been shown to reduce the risk of having to go to the doctor by 40% to 60%. COVID-19 vaccines help protect you by creating an antibody response without having to experience potentially severe illness or post-COVID conditions. And though it's still possible to get sick after being vaccinated, flu and COVID immunizations are proven to help prevent severe illness, which can be lifesaving.

Who should get vaccinated?

Everyone 6 months and older should get their flu and COVID vaccines. You’re best protected when you stay up to date with both vaccinations.

So, who’s most at risk for getting seriously ill from these diseases?

High-risk groups for serious illness or death from flu and COVID include:

  • People over 65
    • More than 81% of COVID-19 deaths occur in this age group.
  • Young children
    • The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates there were between 6,000 to 27,000 flu-related hospitalizations each year among children younger than 5 between 2010-2020.
  • Those with respiratory illnesses such as asthma or illnesses that lower their immunity

If you have a chronic disease or immune condition, talk with your doctor about the vaccine option right for you.

What should I know about the flu shot?

Flu viruses are always changing and every year a new flu vaccine is developed to protect against the viruses believed to be found during the upcoming season. Keep in mind:

  • Although you may experience flu-like symptoms after a flu shot, these side effects are temporary and far less severe than getting the flu.
  • Children 6 months through 8 years may need two doses during a single flu season. Everyone else only needs one dose each flu season.
  • Even when the flu vaccine doesn’t exactly match the viruses, it can still provide protection.
  • You can get the flu immunization at the same time as other vaccines.
  • If you’re pregnant, you can get the flu shot at any time during your pregnancy.

What should I know about the COVID vaccine?

The COVID-19 vaccine was developed under the most intensive safety monitoring program in U.S. history. It’s important to remember:

  • Although you may experience flu-like symptoms after a COVID shot, these side effects are temporary and far less severe than getting COVID.
  • Getting the vaccine is a safer, more reliable way of protecting yourself from COVID than getting sick with the disease, especially since it can have long-term health effects.
  • COVID-19 vaccines were developed using science that has been around for decades.
  • Scientists have conducted clinical COVID-19 trials with thousands of children and adults and have found no serious safety concerns for this vaccine.
  • Hundreds of millions of people in the United States have gotten their COVID vaccines.
  • The benefits of getting your COVID vaccination outweigh any known and potential risks. Serious side effects from the COVID-19 immunization are rare.
  • If you’re pregnant, you can – and should – get your COVID shot.

Don’t miss out! Get your flu and COVID shots ASAP.

It should be easy to see that getting a tiny stick in the arm beats being stuck at home and missing that next party, family gathering or holiday. Especially while your friends and family get together without you (and then remind you of all the moments you missed for years to come).

Avoid the sting of missing out – protect yourself from the flu and COVID!
