Important facts about colorectal cancer
Colorectal cancer is the
2nd
leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Iowa when combining men and women
Approximately 1 in 22 men and 1 in 24 women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in their lifetime
Begin screening at age 45. Recommended screening
until age 75
You may need to begin screening earlier than age 45 if you have an increased risk or family history of colorectal cancer
It starts as a tiny growth or "polyp" in the colon or rectum
It is often preventable by getting screened and if detected early can be 90% treatable
You may be at higher risk if colorectal cancer runs in your family
You can help reduce risk through healthy diet and exercise, limit alcohol use and don't smoke
7 out of 10 people diagnosed with colorectal cancer had no signs or symptoms. Don't wait for symptoms to be checked.
Screening saves lives
There are several screening test options. Talk to your doctor about the one that's right for you!
