Important facts about colorectal cancer

  • Colorectal cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Iowa when combining men and women
  • Approximately 1 in 22 men and 1 in 24 women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in their lifetime
  • Begin screening at age 45. Recommended screening until age 75
  • You may need to begin screening earlier than age 45 if you have an increased risk or family history of colorectal cancer
  • It starts as a tiny growth or "polyp" in the colon or rectum
  • It is often preventable by getting screened and if detected early can be 90% treatable
  • You may be at higher risk if colorectal cancer runs in your family
  • You can help reduce risk through healthy diet and exercise, limit alcohol use and don't smoke
