The Swimming Pool and Spa Program recommends avoiding alcohol whenever swimming or boating. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, alcohol use is involved in up to 70% of deaths associated with water recreation. Alcohol influences balance, coordination, and judgment and its effects are heightened by sun exposure, wind, wave action, sun glare, and heat.
Some people have drowned in shallow water when they lost their balance and were unable to stand up after consuming alcohol. Individuals may also take risks, such as diving into shallow water, which he or she may not normally take. Alcohol can also reduce swimming skills, even those of an excellent swimmer.
