Provide Barriers/Fencing

The minimum requirements for public pool enclosures are set in 641 IAC Chapter 15 as well as local building code ordinances. The Swimming Pool and Spa Program recommends the installation of barriers such as pool fencing at all pools or spas to prevent young children from gaining access to swimming pools or spas without their parent or caregivers supervision. To be effective barriers should be: at least 48 inches tall have no openings that would allow passage of a 4” sphere be of a non-climbable design and have self-closing, self-latching, lockable gates

Guidance for Residential Pools

The Swimming Pool and Spa Program recommends the installation of barriers at residential pools or spas that meet the minimum standards in 641 IAC Chapter 15 to prevent young children from gaining access to the pools or spas without their parent or caregivers supervision.

It is important that homeowners check with the city that they live in to see if there are local ordinances in place concerning pool and spa barrier requirements. If there are no requirements in place, the Swimming Pool ad Spa Program would recommend that homeowners use the Consumer Product Safety Commission Safety Barrier Guidelines for Residential Pools.
