Syndromic Surveillance

The Iowa Department of Public Health, CyncHealth Iowa, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and users from the Center for Acute Disease Epidemiology and Substance Abuse is implementing syndromic surveillance capabilities for the state of Iowa for a project that began May 17,2021. The objective is to onboard all Iowa hospitals electing to participate in Syndromic Surveillance between May 2021 and December 2022.

Syndromic surveillance provides public health officials with a near real time system for detecting, understanding, and monitoring health events. By tracking symptoms of patients—before a diagnosis is confirmed—public health can detect unusual levels of health events to determine emergency response needs.

We will be updating this website in the coming months to provide resources on how to participate in this program and incentives being provided by CMS and IDPH for that participation.

Stay tuned!
