IDPH Funded Improving Tomorrow: Prevention Focused Mentoring Programs

Youth mentoring is an effective way to support Iowans, by offering young people the chance to connect with someone who cares about their health, wellbeing, and development.  Research shows that mentoring is an effective strategy for promoting resilience and preventing negative outcomes for youth in a variety of personal, academic, and professional situations. The Iowa Department of Public Health recognizes the value of youth mentoring and supports 10 community and school-based mentoring agencies in the state that connect new mentors to young Iowan's year round.  To improve outcomes for youth, the mentoring programs support the state's goal of primary prevention of use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) as well as problem gambling.
